Senior Trade Commissioner, Beijing

Alan manages the North China network of Austrade offices with locations in Beijing, Dalian, Qingdao and Xian. This area of 16 provinces includes both large cities and urban areas, as well as more remote regions in the North West and North East of the country. He came to this role in September 2008 having transferred from Guangzhou where he had managed the South China network for Austrade. Directly prior to this he was the Regional Senior Trade Commissioner for ASEAN (East) based in the Philippines, also covering Vietnam and Guam (2003-2007). Previous positions have included Senior Trade Commissioner to Pakistan & Afghanistan (2000-2002) and Trade Commissioner in Shanghai (1996-1999). He has also held short term positions as Austrade State Manager Western Australia and Officer assisting the Austrade Executive General Manager for Australia and the Pacific.

Prior to his public service Alan worked in private sector roles that included tour wholesaling in Southeast Asia, and in the offshore and onshore oil industry in central Australia, the North Sea and Middle East.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Murdoch University with double majors in marketing and Asian Economies, and has pursued graduate studies focused on Asia with INSEAD Singapore. A Chinese speaker, Alan has an abiding interest in Asia, the Middle East and a collection of other challenging business environments, as ‘they’re far more interesting than the other places’.
