Protecting Yourself in China: Stories From the Front Line

7 May 2009

12:30-2pm
Sydney

Venue:
Bligh Room, Hunt & Hunt,
Level 13, Gateway Building,
1 Macquarie Place, Sydney

Description:
China is the last great hope for global businesses: it is the only economy that is still growing, and its stimulus package looks to be working.  It offers foreign businesses an ideal manufacturing base and a very promising market.   But there are risks to doing business in China, and it pays to go in prepared.

Bruce McLaughlin, CEO of Sinogie Consulting, has been working with foreign investors in China since 1996, and has seen people make every mistake imaginable.  Hear him discuss some of the more interesting foreign investment and intellectual property protection stories that he has come across in his years in China.  Hear stories about:

  • The company that tried to invest US$ 20 million in a company that didn’t exist.
  • The company that invested US$ 30 million in a joint venture with a company that had been stolen from the army.
  • The company that faced closure for violating imaginary environmental-protection laws.
  • The company whose products were being counterfeited by someone that everyone thought was in prison.

More importantly, hear how to make sure that none of this happens to you.  Learn how to check who your business partners really are; how to deal with local governments; and how to protect and enforce your intellectual property rights.
