Western Australia

Overview

Duncan Calder

ACBC WA serves as a focal point for the State’s business relations with China.

Western Australia enjoys a strong partnership with China and is thriving on a trade and investment relationship built upon the export of minerals, energy, agricultural goods and education services and Chinese investment in the Western Australian resources sector. Western Australia accounts for over 70% of Australia’s total merchandise exports to China in 2011 and 80% of China's investment into Australia over the last five years.

With more than 200 member companies, ACBC WA has played a leading role in promoting the business relationships between Western Australia and China and represents a wide variety of businesses actively involved with China.
Membership includes major resources companies such as Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, Fortescue Metals Group and Woodside, through to medium and small businesses involved in Australia- China trade.

ACBC WA has early on recognised the importance of building relationships with Chinese companies operating in Western Australia, a number of which have joined ACBC WA and are represented on our Executive Committee. Chinese companies who are members include Sinosteel, CNOOC, CITIC Pacific Mining, MCC and Yankuang.

ACBC WA stays abreast of the rapid developments in Australia- China relationships with an Executive Committee that brings together expertise in resources, agriculture, education and professional services. A subcommittee structure allows the Executive Committee to specifically target needs across these various sectors of industry and trade.

ACBC WA also maintains strong ties with government at the Federal and State level, and enjoys strong working relationships with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Austrade, the WA Department of State Development, and the WA Department of Food and Agriculture. ACBC WA has a strategic alliance with The Confucius Institute at The University of Western Australia, which is dedicated to the promotion and development of Chinese language and culture.

ACBC WA organises many events for our members each year. Our annual Chinese New Year and China National Day dinners have become highlight events of the bilateral business community, attended by 700 business leaders.

ACBC WA will continue its commitment to building understanding and communications, relationships, trade and investment between Western Australia and China.
