ACBC in Victoria has played a leading role in building links between Australia and China since 1973.
The relationship between Victoria and China is one that is based not merely upon trade and business, but also upon a deep people to people relationship. China is Victoria’s largest trading partner and its impact on Victoria’s economy, businesses and people will continue to grow in significance.

In 2010, Mayor of Tianjin Huang Xingguo led the 100 strong delegation to Melbourne to commemorate the 30 year anniversary of the Sister City relationship. The Tianjin relationship is one of the most valuable for any city or country doing business with China given, that it is not just one of China’s largest cities, but one that the Chinese government has positioned as one of China’s leading cities and growth engines.
Just the year before Party Secretary Liang Baohua from Jiangsu Province, was in Victoria with a significant delegation for the 30th anniversary of Sister Province relations between Victoria and Jiangsu. The then Governor of Victoria David de Kretser AC and Patron of ACBC Victoria hosted the group. Relations were consolidated and exchanges cemented on that occasion, such as the long-term academic agreement between Monash University and China South-East University in Nanjing.
In 2011, China Minmetals Corporation launched the first Sustainability Report outside of China in Melbourne with Vice President Zhang Yuanrong joined members, stakeholders and community representatives at a dinner launch jointly organised with ACBC Victoria.
Victorian Premier, The Hon Ted Baillieu MP announced at a gala dinner initiatives elevating Victoria’s engagement with China in the presence of Governor of Victoria, Alex Chernov AO QC, Consul General Shi Weiqiang, the Lord Mayor of Melbourne The Rt Hon Robert Doyle and 500 members and guests.
ACBC Victoria regularly hosts significant delegations from China and provides access to their counterparts in Australia through briefings and networking. ACBC Victoria has also showcased the pre-eminent position industries such as the automotive industry, agriculture and food processing, clean energy, architecture and green building technology, service industries of tourism, education, banking and Finance sector and social security occupy in Victoria.
